The range above is an indicative planning figure taken from our own research, not a quotation and not an offer. buytogethr is pre-launch and has closed no pools.

What you are actually buying

An MRI purchase is a magnet, a siting project and a licence bundle. The specification must carry field strength, bore diameter, gradient amplitude and slew rate, the full coil complement, the sequence and post-processing packages, the RF-shielded cabin, quench pipe route, floor loading and magnet access, the chiller and cold head, and the reporting workstation. Quotes diverge most on coils and licences: two systems at the same field strength buy very different clinical capability if one lists optional coils and annual sequence licences that the other includes. Buyers routinely compare field strength and price, then discover that neuro, musculoskeletal or breast work needs coils and packages that were never in the quoted configuration.

Why mri suits collective purchasing

MRI aggregates less naturally than radiography. Installations are fewer, siting differs building by building, and clinical intent varies widely between institutions. What pools is the commercial frame rather than the machine: run MRI alongside CT so the same small group of imaging OEMs bids for a combined imaging requirement, and the leverage comes from the combined ticket rather than unit count. The supply side is concentrated enough for that to matter, with five OEMs accounting for over 91% of MRI revenue in the Competition Commission of India's market study. Fewer buyers, each large, means the pool must be credible rather than numerous.

Pin down before price

  • Field strength, bore diameter, gradient amplitude and slew rate quoted together, as they set achievable sequence times
  • Every coil named with its channel count, and each optional coil marked as optional
  • Sequence and post-processing licences listed individually: perpetual, annual, or per workstation
  • Siting scope: RF cabin, quench pipe route, structural loading, chiller and cold head, magnet delivery access
  • Helium fill and cold-head servicing responsibility, including what happens after a quench

What drives ten-year cost

  • Cryogen and cold-head servicing continue whether or not the magnet is scanning
  • Coil repair and replacement, which standard service contracts often exclude by default
  • Annual licence renewals on sequences and post-processing packages
  • An in-state service facility and parts holding, which the public tenders this model borrows from require as an undertaking

How a pool for this runs

1
Aggregate the demand. Institutions register a requirement and a timeline. Nothing is committed and nothing is paid — the pool simply establishes how much demand exists in one window.
2
Standardise the specification. One technical specification is written for the pooled requirement, so every bidder quotes the same machine. Clinical and engineering specification is never traded away for price.
3
Qualify the suppliers. OEMs and authorised distributors are qualified on manufacturer authorisation, past performance, end-user certificates, financials and demonstration — before any price is opened.
4
Run the price competition. Only technically qualified bidders enter an online reverse auction, with a minimum decrement and automatic extension so the close cannot be sniped.
5
Award on ten-year cost. Lowest is judged on total cost of ownership over ten years — machine, turnkey, software, accessories, transport, insurance, taxes, warranty, maintenance contract, tubes, uptime and training.
6
Buy directly, individually. Each institution raises its own purchase order against the negotiated price and pays the OEM or dealer directly. buytogethr never takes title, never holds stock and never holds your money.
