The range above is an indicative planning figure taken from our own research, not a quotation and not an offer. buytogethr is pre-launch and has closed no pools.

What you are actually buying

The console is the visible part of this purchase and the smaller part of the cost on a busy cataract list. What an institution really commits to is a proprietary single-use pack for every case, plus handpieces that wear and are repaired or replaced across the machine's life. Quotes differ on fluidics, peristaltic or venturi or both; on ultrasound modality; on how many handpieces are supplied and on what repair terms; on whether an anterior vitrectomy module is included and at what cut rate; and on foot pedal programmability and stored surgeon profiles. The error is settling the console price while the pack price and handpiece terms stay open, when annual case volume is what decides the total.

Why phaco machine suits collective purchasing

Pooling needs care here, because surgeon preference is genuine and aggregation must never override a clinical specification. The workable form follows the tender pattern: qualify two or three systems technically, let each institution choose among them, then compete on the consumable schedule and handpiece terms across the combined annual cataract volume. Cataract lists in teaching hospitals, eye hospitals and mid-size hospitals are predictable and large, and forward visibility of that workload is what earns a multi-year pack price. The console alone is a poor pooling unit. The case pack over several years is a strong one.

Pin down before price

  • Fluidics type, and whether both peristaltic and venturi modes are available
  • Handpieces supplied, with repair or replacement terms written into the award
  • Anterior vitrectomy module, its cut rate, and whether fitted or optional
  • Per-case pack contents, with the price held for the full contract term
  • Foot pedal programmability, surgeon profiles and power backup requirement

What drives ten-year cost

  • Single-use packs across the annual cataract volume, the dominant lifetime cost
  • Handpiece repair and replacement treated as recurring rather than one-time
  • Tips, sleeves and test chambers
  • Service response and loaner availability, since one console stops the whole list

How a pool for this runs

1
Aggregate the demand. Institutions register a requirement and a timeline. Nothing is committed and nothing is paid — the pool simply establishes how much demand exists in one window.
2
Standardise the specification. One technical specification is written for the pooled requirement, so every bidder quotes the same machine. Clinical and engineering specification is never traded away for price.
3
Qualify the suppliers. OEMs and authorised distributors are qualified on manufacturer authorisation, past performance, end-user certificates, financials and demonstration — before any price is opened.
4
Run the price competition. Only technically qualified bidders enter an online reverse auction, with a minimum decrement and automatic extension so the close cannot be sniped.
5
Award on ten-year cost. Lowest is judged on total cost of ownership over ten years — machine, turnkey, software, accessories, transport, insurance, taxes, warranty, maintenance contract, tubes, uptime and training.
6
Buy directly, individually. Each institution raises its own purchase order against the negotiated price and pays the OEM or dealer directly. buytogethr never takes title, never holds stock and never holds your money.
