What you are actually buying
This is a package rather than a product: a distribution transformer of a stated rating and vector group, HT switchgear, LT panels for power and motor control, power factor correction, the interconnection between them, and installation and commissioning. Bidders differ on whether the transformer is oil-filled or dry type, the guaranteed no-load and load losses, the temperature rise, the form of separation in the panel, the short-circuit withstand rating and its duration, the busbar material and the brands of breaker, relay and meter inside. Buyers who compare panel prices without first fixing form of separation, withstand rating and an approved component list are comparing assemblies that are not the same assembly.
Why electrical panels / transformers suits collective purchasing
Panels and transformers are the first category we plan to add after the opening set, and they aggregate for a specific reason: the ratings repeat. Most institutional projects draw on the same handful of transformer ratings and the same panel configurations, so a group can publish one technical schedule with a few variants. Be clear about what pooling buys here. Panels are built to order, so the gain is a common standard and competitive assembly rates against a fixed component list, not a shelf item bought in bulk. The transformer line behaves more conventionally and is where a pooled quantity carries the most weight.
Pin down before price
- Transformer rating, vector group, cooling and type, with guaranteed no-load and load losses stated
- LT panel form of separation, short-circuit withstand rating and duration, busbar material and rating
- An approved component list for breakers, relays, meters and contactors, binding on every bidder
- Type test certificates and the factory acceptance test scope, with the IP rating for the actual location
- Earthing, cable termination and interconnection clearly inside or outside the scope
What drives ten-year cost
- No-load losses run every hour for the life of the transformer, whatever the building is doing
- Load losses and power factor correction, including the capacitor replacement cycle
- Oil testing, thermographic inspection and breaker servicing through the maintenance contract
- Spares and lead time for the chosen breaker range once that range is superseded
